The One-and-Only Wale — Born of Time and Technique

A fabric’s value is not defined by appearance alone. It is shaped by the people behind it: who made it, where they work, how much care they take, and the skill they bring to every step. That accumulation of time and technique reveals itself the moment you touch the cloth. In its softness. In the way it holds its form when worn. And in the durability that lets it be lived in for years.

For this collection, MOMOTARO JEANS selected an original 13-wale corduroy woven from Supima cotton. At a finishing mill still operating in Japan’s Enshū region, the fabric is carefully brought to its final state through hands-on processes carried through to the very end. The result is a supple touch and a crisp, dignified depth of shadow. It is said that only one factory in Japan still possesses the capability to complete the full process that forms corduroy’s defining wales.

In Enshū, artisans call this material kōru-ten—their own name for corduroy. A textile once introduced from overseas, refined over generations into something distinctly theirs. Even that single word carries a quiet resolve, and pride in craft that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

FABRIC

Finished to the Very End at One of Japan’s Last Remaining Mills

The value of corduroy is not only in the look of its wales. It lies in the softness against the skin. In the composed presence of a silhouette at rest. In the shadows that shift as you move. These are qualities that can only be achieved when people stay with the fabric and care for it all the way through the finish.

Behind this cloth is one of Enshū’s last remaining finishing sites of its kind—a place where work that cannot be measured by efficiency is still carried out, day after day.

An Uncompromising Approach to Corduroy

The cushioned feel at first touch. The evenness of the nap. The quiet luster that appears under light. This sense of refinement is not woven into the cloth. It is earned in the finishing stages that follow, through time and repetition.

The texture shaped by water, fire, and the blade.

The fabric is tumbled again and again through heat and water. As the fibers loosen, the pile rises along each wale, drawing out a fuller body and a rich, weighty softness. Drying, too, is far more than simply removing moisture. The way the fabric is dried directly affects softness, loft, and comfort against the body, so the finishing is tuned toward its intended hand with the right equipment and seasoned experience.

The process that shapes corduroy’s distinctive wale begins with the blade. In the cutting stage, a blade slices through the loops, severing the yarns so each wale emerges, one by one. From there, tumbling and washing raise the nap and give the ridges their fullness. Finally, singeing removes stray fuzz, aligns the pile evenly, and sharpens the luster and contours of every ridge.

A Wale Like No Other — Backed by Craftsmanship That Still Lives in Japan

Washing and singeing are repeated in careful succession, while artisans read even subtle shifts in humidity and tension. That sensitivity is what produces shadows found nowhere else. Loosened by water. Shaped by drying. Refined by fire. Raised by the blade.

Remove any single step, and the texture falls short. The depth of shadow born from time and technique, and the refined luster delivered by finishing precision, are what give this corduroy its true value.
