The new MOMOTARO JEANS KYOTO space features a decorative atmosphere that emphasizes themes unique to “denim” and “Kyoto” that combines the main qualities of a traditional Kyoto townhouse as a place that embodies this brand’s attitudes toward dedication to manufacturing that goes back to denim’s origin.
The townhouse located in the Shinmonzen-dori bears many traces of repair and maintenance from the past. It does not depict the beautiful image associated with the word “Kyoto.” In fact, it’s a practical space with no decor that bears the fundamentals of denim factories in Kojima where weaving machines line side by side. In order to inherit the beauties of this townhouse, new materials are intricately added to the old ones while utilizing them. “Lighted” thread (acrylic writings) is applied to the vaulted ceiling’s dark frame that regained its original appearance, by combining them in a 3D form. The brand’s core denim products are stored in a large drawer that is positioned under this object.
Indigo denim’s essence was emphasized in Okayama after spreading from the U.S., where it will further spread from Okayama to Kyoto this spring. The subject of this theme is an empty Kyoto townhouse that is characterized only by its essence. When MOMOTARO JEANS meets Kyoto, we believe it will create a harmony of new values.
ARCHITECTS AS An architecture design office owned by Jun Aoki and Masatoshi Shinagawa. Their major works include the Kyoto Municipal Museum (aka, Kyoto City Kyocera Museum), Senkoji Peak Observation Deck PEAK, and a series of Louis Vuitton stores.
